Getting Fit Over 40 – It Is What It Is

"Acceptance doesn't mean resignation; it means understanding that something is what it is and that there's got to be a way through it."

~ Michael J. Fox

Getting fit over 40 if you’ve not been in the gym for 20+ years, (or ever), can be very hard. A lack of acceptance, that what was, is no longer what is, can make it even harder.

For many, the problem is that in your mind, you’re still that fit 20 something year old. You’re in denial that the overweight, tired-looking individual staring back at you from the mirror, is in fact, YOU.

“It is what it is.”

Where you are now, the body you have is a direct reflection of the life you’ve lived so far.

For the great majority of you, it’s been a pretty fucking good life.

Filled with ups and downs, wins and losses, laughter and sadness.

So what if in all of that you’ve gained a few kilos, that’s a part of life, cherish the body that has carried you this far.

"Appreciate your good health and functioning body- even if it isn’t your ideal size"

~ Holly Butcher

So you’re fat now. Please repeat after me: It is what it is!

Maybe your lower back hurts all the time. Once again, everybody now: It is what it is!

You used to be great at a particular sport (I’ll insert bodyboarding here for myself); now you’re crap. IT IS WHAT IT IS.

"Don't get so caught up in "what was," that you lose sight of "what could be."

Only once you’ve accepted yourself wholeheartedly as you are now, can you begin to make a change.

It is what it is, you are enough right now, just the way you are.

But it is okay to want to improve.

So, if improving is something you want to do, take a small step today. But remember, go easy on yourself, drop the expectation born from past performances and start where you are.

If you don’t know where to start, maybe I can help so please feel free to drop a comment or send me a message.

Have a great day.
